Imperfect, brilliant and rapid.
Risograph machine was born as a typical desktop printer, but, since a few years, it is becoming the new graphic designers’ must have. Loved since its rediscovery, it is a fine mix of the best qualities of screen print and offset print. It makes uniques printings, vivid colors, out of register overlappings and it permits to reach a strong run without having an impact on the environment. The workshop’s participants created experimental, colorful and wonderfully imperfect posters with the tutors of Risotto Studio.

Installation challenge

In a world more and more embedded in a digital dimension, designers sometimes need to return to a phisical and tangible reality. This workshop offered the chance to break out of the digital routine, by realising an installation, outcome that is founded on project and on connection with the surrounding. Using both digital and analogical tools, participants explored and went beyond their own limits. The installation would be the expressive synthesis of a collective work, born by a communal effort of several people with different specific knowledges.

Lo-tech screenprint

Lo-tech, modulor, screen printing workshop using hand-cut paper stencils. No previous printing experience necessary, although it would have been an advantage. Suitable for visual communicators, especially image-makers and type designers. Each participant produced at least one edition of 20 (1 ink) print.

A memory, a drawing

Olimpia Zagnoli guided them through the process of graphically representing a memory. They were prompted to recall a small and familiar detail of some experience and translate it into an illustration in order to stimulate future observations and wake past ones up. Their daily routine became an interesting conversational subject and a trigger for a creative process. How would you give new life and and graphically represent those tiny bits of everyday life? This workshop sharpened their synthesis skills while trying to balance color, shapes and emotions.

Brushpen Calligraphy

Brushpens are marker pens with synthetic tip which simulate a round-tip paintbrush. Those tools readily respond to hand pressure and allow the user to draw shapes and lines in an impactful way. Through different exercises they uncovered the full potential of this tool and discovered how to draw dynamic shapes: starting from abstract marks they obtained a complete font set. Brushpens were used to recreate the structure of well known typefaces such as the chancery writing, providing as final outcome a versatile and dynamic alphabet, customized by each participant.

Custom type and wordmarks

The workshop focused on customisation of type, with participants learning how to create their own set of custom letters and customise typefaces.
These skills and processes have been practically applied to design unique word marks – distinct type-only logos.
