Orientation through Design: Meet Pentagram’s Sascha Lobe

In the field of spatial linguistics, 3-D communication is most often times seen in direct contrast to its not-so-distant 2-D relative. With the vision of Sascha Lobe, these dimensions are integrated: “Wayfinding systems, signage, print, branding and identity projects all take on dual forms. My aim is to create a distinct, visual syntax that translates the idiosyncratic identity of each project”.

The most celebrated identity for the Bauhaus-Archiv Museum was designed by Sascha Lobe and his team. Just recently Lobe finalized his 5-year collaboration with David Chipperfield Architects on the branding and wayfinding of the Amorepacific headquarters located in Seoul, South Korea.

Lobe has also experienced working with other star architects – most notably Ben Van Berkel (UN Studio) and Daniel Liebeskind – he noticed a gap where architectural attributes left off and visual information needed to be communicated. Forecasting this need, he began to design graphic elements and systemize information for it to be recognized intuitively, efficiently and accurately. In this way, interior structures became streamlined through outward communication, as proper orientation and navigation are especially important for the end-user. With an effective guiding interface, the atmosphere, identity and emotion of a space become all the more affable for those in its environs.

These attributes have been injected into extensive projects Lobe has undertaken across cultural and commerical institutions such as those for Vitra, Adidas, Mercedes-Benz, Ruhr Museum, Württembergischer Kunstverein, Kreisssparkasse (KSK) Tübingen, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Westfalen and many more.

The endless quest

Magoz’s work is driven by curiosity and learning. During the last five years, he has been traveling around the world as a nomad, creating illustrations and animations, writing on his blog and building online tools for the illustration community. The endless quest is a walkthrough of his work, interests and findings.

PAOLO TASSINARI
26 x 62

Through a series of editorial projects by Tassinari/Vetta, Paolo Tassinari will explain the difference between design and creation: how every graphic design project finds reason in the restrictions around it; how troubles can turn into opportunities; how ambiguity is useful for the communication. And how a designer, sometimes, feels the need to jump that fence.

RENE WAWRZKIEWICZ
Symbol to Logo: Polish Graphic Marks 1945-1969, 2000-2015

Symbol to Logo comes as a reconstruction of The 1st and The 2nd Polish Exhibitions of Graphic Symbols that were held in 1969 and 2015. Rene will present the unknown history of logo design in Communist Poland as a reminder of the forgotten stars of Polish design. This report will show how logos and visual identities have changed since the post-war years to the present days, evolving from individual symbols to complex visual identities, in a metaphor of the history of Polish society over the past seventy years.

SLIM DOGS
How to transform your passion into a work without getting excessively poor

In 2007 Matteo Bruno opened a YouTube channel as Cane Secco. In 2014 Matteo Bruno together with three other guys opened a video production studio named Slim Dogs Production. In 2018 Slim Dogs Production didn’t go under yet. How did a YouTube channel manage to evolve into a business activity? We in Slim Dogs will try to give an answer to this question although we don’t actually know how this could have happened, so don’t expect a big deal.

COPENHAGEN SIGNS
The new era of traditional sign painting – Making a living by the brush

The art of the traditional hand painted sign is having a revival. But why choose a hand painted sign, when you can get one made with an automated machine cheaper and faster? Because hand painted signs have soul! Made by human hands with all their beautiful imperfections, hand painted signs set a gap from the majority of digital rendered signage. Jakob Engberg is a full time sign painter, keeping the craft alive. He will speak about his passion for this traditional work and why hand painted signs have place in 2018.

JONATHAN PIERINI
To make many books there is no end…

What does publishing mean today, starting from my work at ISIA Urbino and with the new Progetto Grafico magazine? Publishing means many things, ranging from a spontaneous action to an articulated professional workflow. Publishing can be a punctual event as well as a life-long project, but certainly it means to occupy a physical or digital space. In my practice, publishing is not a private process which aims at distributing an output. It is instead a public process that produces space for debate.

BAUGASM
What I learned while designing a poster every day for two years

Baugasm will share his experience on doing something everyday for two years and what he learned on being consistent. He will talk about the start of his career, all the things he learned while doing his one-poster-a-day project and why it’s so crucial to be consistent in your work.

CAFFÈ DESIGN
My banker rides a longboard

People has changed. Media have changed. Languages have changed. Brands have changed. Right? Maybe not. Isn’t it true that a Brand should speak to people as it was speaking to its best friend? Isn’t it true that Designers are obsessed language creators? For us, yes. Informality is one of those languages. And it’s the key. The challenge is: how? How to draw that infamous line that separates being stupid from being informal? But hey, isn’t it the essence of Design?

STUDIO MUCHO
Think, Play, Design

The conference will be structured in 3 parts. First, understanding how humans perceive or think. How we see, understand and feel. Do we interact with the world with our mind, our body or imagination? The second part is to explain how we create thinks. From where do ideas come from. How does it work? The last one is a guidance to be a better designer. How to overcome fears and not fall into the same mistakes.

MAURO BUBBICO
The hail storm and the song of the cicada

The hail storm and the cicada are two figures in contradiction that share a short existence: the first one comes suddenly, violent destroyer of every sight of future. The second one is the voice of a meaningless and lazy being, wreckage of memories from a happy time. Both are metaphors of southern Italy, a place of contrasts where beauty and ugliness mix together. We can turn the tragedy of contradiction into beauty, without fearing conflicts but learning to recall them. This is what I tried to do and what I’d like to tell you.

SAATCHI & SAATCHI – Riccardo Catagnano
How to destroy 30 years of advertising in just 30”

We’ll tell you the asteroide advertising campaign for Buondì Motta, one of the most debated communication cases of the last twenty years in Italy. A journey through stereotypes and cliches of advertising, that will reveal all the ruses used by two insightful creative men to shatter (almost) all of them.

MICHAŁ JAROCIŃSKI
Typefaces’ Bloodline

Letters are not just abstract forms that are used for an emotionless transmission of contents. They have personality and character. They even have a nationality. As a medium to convey local traditions, history and culture, they are the key to the graphic design that really matters.

GINETTE CARON
Form comes from wonder (Louis Kahn)

The backgrounds of some works of the studio, dedicated to architecture, will be told through the client’s brief, the inspiration, the definition of the project’s concept, the relationships with the architects and the customers.
We will notice how each project emanates its own unique essence, because inspiration comes from the uniqueness of the context and from the elusive wonder.

The Generative Book

After the first three volumes were published in 2017 and 2018, Stefano Mirti together with the publisher Nuphap Aunyanuphap will present to the general public the fourth and new version of his famous Generative Book. The whole work will be complete once the tenth volume will be published. The Generative Book is neither a novel nor a theory volume, nor a composition manual, nor a game. But at the same time it is all this things together. It is a great work about the impossibility to complete great works.

AUGE DESIGN – DAVIDE MOSCONI
Stand-out packaging: when packaging mass-market meets design

In supermarkets we can find the biggest cluster of popular graphic art made accessible to everyone: thousands of pictures, typefaces, illustrations, messages and colors. A visual universe based on patterns that have been standardized and flattened since too many years. We got used to an ugly aesthetic that sells. Will it be possible to bring back beauty, courage and fresh ideas in mass packaging?

SLANTED PUBLISHERS – JULIA KAHL
Travel, design, publish, love!

In a world of globalization: What do we really know from each other? How does the design scene look like in a different country and what are the moments of happiness and problems people are dealing with in their daily lives? As partner of the media and publishing house Slanted Publishers and designer and editor of Slanted Magazine and the daily blog www.slanted.de, Julia Kahl will give insights in her work and thoughts and the mindset of running an independent publishing house.

Giorgio Camuffo will talk about the story of the magazine Imago and the actors that collaborated with it during the years, also presenting his editorial project dedicated to the publication. From 1960 to 1969 Michele Provinciali and Raffaele Bassoli, holder of Bassoli Fotoincisioni in Milan, publish Imago, an experimental magazine offering a wide range of graphic ideas, printing and stationery solutions. The magazine will be crucial for the italian graphic design scene that in that period was reaching its pinnacle.

EDGAR BAK
Learning from the 90s

Edgar will display a mix of images and films from the late 90s and 00s, showing the transition and connection between the analogue – prints, cassettes, television – and the digital era – internet, Facebook and iPhones. The lecture will show how projects based on history, kitsch, foibles, cheapness and oddity are becoming more modern, interesting and effective than projects rooted in the present.

TYPE2 – FILIP ZAGÓRSKY
Design for culture in the Polish context: Rationalism vs. Romanticism

Graphic design in Poland can be described by paradoxes: West/East, rigour and need for autonomy, systematic approach and polish rebellious soul, rationalism and romanticism. This wealth of opposing characteristics produces a creative tension in which we, Polish designers, constantly try to fight the omnipresent visual chaos.
