Character animation in AfterEffects

When a motion designer faces the challenge of a character, he immediately discovers that it is much more complex than it may seem. Dozens of interconnected levels must move together and must do it harmoniously. During this workshop Emanuele will show the technique he uses to bring his characters to life, starting from the basic rules of animation (squash and stretch, overlapping and follow through), to how to easily reproduce them with After Effects by applying them to the movements of each single part of the character’s body. The workshop is dedicated to professional motion designers.

The workshop will be in Italian.

Continuous Creativity

In this workshop participants will be integrating each other’s ideas. They will form 3-4 groups, and each group will create a stop motion animation using random objects with no restrictions. The emphasis is on quick and spontaneous collaboration, in which there are no bad ideas. Each team won’t finish his own project (the one it has started with), it will swap and continue with other several times, building on top of the previous work. In the afternoon, moving in the opposite order, as usual, participants will create the story and the concept to the animations. Then they bring them to life using different techniques to give them a physical format such as a poster. By the end of the workshop, they will show their results to each other.

Generative identity

Starting from an archive containing mountain postcards representing the Piedmontese Alps, (http://www.cartolinedairifugi.it/category/regioni/piemonte/) the participants will start a path of analysis and considerations on the concepts of borders, migrations, freedom and integration. The Alps as a visual boundary do not allow to see the horizon and what lies beyond their ridges but, at the same time, they have been and still are a place of transition, solidarity, conflict and struggle. Each participant will have to select a postcard (or a detail of it) on which he will intervene in an analogical or digital way. Then it will be used to make a poster that will be set also to be a flyer. Workshop participants will be provided with the basic skills to design and develop a coordinated generative identity project that will produce 15 different posters, which  will be part of the same finished product.

Collective fanzine

Following the principles of The Surrealist and their way to move around collaboration, playfulness and artistic freedom, the final goal of the workshop is the creation of a collective fillustrated fanzine, written and screenprinted by the participants during the day. Participants will start building a story by playing a round of “Consequences”, a game loved by the surrealists, in which players write in turns on a sheet of paper, fold it to cover their part of the writing, and then pass it to the next player who continues the story, and so on. Each participant will then illustrate one sentence of the story, and, following a technical imprint about screenprint and the preparation of the screens, will hand print it in one color onto paper. Printing will then be followed by the binding of all the artworks into a collaborative fanzine.

The workshop will be in English.


Skills required

This workshop is suitable for all types or creatives: illustrators, graphic designers or anyone with a passion for art, who is able to work at a fast pace. Basic photoshop or illustrator knowledge is required, while experience in screenprint is not a must.

All types or creatives: illustrators, graphic designers or anyone with a passion for illustration, drawing, printing or graphic design.


Necessary material

Bring your favorite drawing tools and your laptop, as well as clothes that you don’t mind marking with ink, we will get our hands dirty!

Serious playing around with the Alphabet

Participants are going to have some serious fun with the alphabet! They will have a full day of playing around with all the 26 characters. They won’t focus on boring topics like result, style, ego, etc., but they’re going to break with all these limitations and work together on one big zine. All this playing around will give them a full zine with alphabets.

The workshop will be in English.


Skills required

You’ll need an open mind to work together with them on the zine. It’s definitely OK if you don’t have experience with letters. But it’s also never a problem if you do!


Target group

People who like to play! And of course would like to learn about letters, calligraphy, type and typography.

Analog colour mixing and printmaking

Create a 3 colour Risograph print of your favourite product label! Each participant will create and print a 3 colour riso print of his/her favourite product label. During this workshop the tutors won’t focus on how pretty the chosen label looks but on how to create a layered print and discover different possibilities to get the most out of a 3 printing colours. The goal is to make the print completely by hand, so dress properly as you may use ink, paint, crayon, spray paint etc. It would be smart to think upfront of which label each participant want to make and even to make some sketches, because the time will run out quickly, so the advice is: keep it simple!

The workshop will be in English.


Skills required

The workshop is suitable for designers with at least basic knowledge. You should be able to create in a small amount of time. If you want to use a laptop, bring it! If you think you need something else specific, bring it!


Target group

People who know a little about how to make a design suited for techniques like screenprinting and riso printing.

The small format of a public transport ticket during the workshop will become a place for editorial experimentation, focusing on the guide book form. Serial stories, narrative fragments, a welcome tool for visitors and a surprise for residents. At the end of the workshop, the series of tickets will be printed to create a large collective guide to the city of Turin.
