Graphic Days® Vol.9

A Kind - Of - Future

May 16-26, 2024

Festival

The Graphic Days® Festival is an event dedicated to Italian and international visual design that, since 2016, has involved the most relevant artists, professionals, and studios on the international scene.

The Theme

“A kind of future” is an invitation to think about the future through creativity, placing kindness at the center of every design action.

“A kind of future” is primarily a hypothesis of the future, focusing on the use of new languages and the enhancement of creativity and young talents. Experimentation is understood in a 360° way, ranging from the creative and innovative decontextualized use of common objects to the most cutting-edge technologies based on artificial intelligence and the development of new tools. “A kind future” is the second interpretation of the festival: a future that places kindness at the center, where attention to people and the planet is the primary goal of every design action.

The ninth edition of the international visual and social design festival Graphic Days® took place from May 16 to 26 at the Flashback Habitat spaces in Turin. An exhibition path, a permanent workspace, and a calendar of events including conferences, workshops, live performances, DJ sets, and activities for children, at the main venue and spread throughout the city, will interpret the title “A kind of future” through two perspectives.

Live Printing: a permanent open workspace curated by Print Club Torino, accessible to everyone.

An exhibition path divided into 20 exhibitions to present the creative perspectives of visual language through various forms of experimentation.

A calendar of events featuring workshops, talks, performances, concerts, a market exhibition, and a section of initiatives dedicated to schools and families.

The city-wide schedule “In the city”: on May 17 and 24, local design studios opened their doors to the public, offering exhibitions, conferences, and activities related to visual arts and cross-contamination.

The conference program consists of 8 talks, a rich schedule of events that intensifies over the weekend. Communication agencies, designers, and artists have shared their projects and creative paths to reflect on the future of design and the work of creatives, with attention to the social responsibilities of designers.

Additionally, the awarding of the winners of the fourth edition of Neologia took place in the presence of all project partners and included 3 events in collaboration with Fedrigoni, the Turin Chamber of Commerce, the Italian Art Directors Club, and UNA Aziende Unite della Comunicazione.

During the inauguration, 3 live artistic performances were curated by de Boer, Giuntini, Nodo, and Truly Design.

In the evening, there were also moments of live music with DJ sets curated by Taxi 42.

The workshops offered included 4 for adults, professionals and non-professionals, and 8 for children. The tutors involved were: Nodo – Tufting Torino, Lars Harmsen / Slanted, Vincent de Boer, and Print Club Torino.

An exhibition path divided into 20 exhibitions to present the creative perspectives of visual language through various forms of experimentation. Starting with a monographic exploration of the works of Vincent de Boer, Matteo Giuntini, and Team Thursday, ample space is dedicated to the international context with Around the World exhibitions.

The future is explored through the lens of social design in “We mix design and people” with the experience of the Farm Cultural Park center and projects ranging from data design to editorial and visual design. During the visit, the public could actively participate in the creative production by interacting with multimedia installations based on artificial intelligence and generative art.

Neologia, the exhibition of winning projects from the under 30 contest of Graphic Days®, and Signs, curated by BIG Biennale Internazionale Grafica and dedicated to the work of 12 communication agencies, offer a glimpse into Italian production.

The live printing station offers a permanent open workspace curated by the Print Club Torino laboratory, accessible to everyone. Here, visitors can experiment with various types of printing, from screen printing to letterpress.

Within the exhibition path, the audience had the opportunity to interact with several installations: Data-Pond: the dark room of Graphic Days®, Pixel Faces: an experimental project that investigates the perception and chromatic decomposition of images, and Aesthetics Imperfections: which opens a dialogue between the human mind and the capabilities of machines, celebrating the uniqueness of each trace left by the creative act.

In the outdoor spaces of the park, a selection of 20 works from the international call Fight for Kindness, promoted by TypeCampus, alongside the artwork of Truly Design, was featured.

A rich calendar of events that intensified over the weekend. Communication agencies, designers, and artists shared projects and creative paths to reflect on the future of design and the work of creatives, with a focus on the social responsibilities of designers.

Guiding these workshops are guests like Lars Harmsen, Vincent de Boer, and Nodo – Tufting Torino.

Building on the legacy of the 2022 edition of the festival, 8 workshops were also offered for children, allowing them to experiment with paper weaving, stamps, inks, painting, and upcycling.
